Custom vs Modular Exhibition Stands: Which Is Right for You?

Custom vs Modular Exhibition Stands: Which Is Right for You?

    The fundamental trade-off

Custom exhibition stands are designed and fabricated from scratch for a specific brand, show, and space. Modular stands use reconfigurable components — aluminium frames, fabric graphics, and standardised panels — that can be adapted across multiple events.

The choice between them is not simply about budget. It's about how central physical presence is to your business development strategy.

    When custom makes sense

Custom stands deliver the highest brand impact. If you're launching a product, hosting VIP meetings, or competing for attention against 200 other exhibitors at a major trade show, a custom build gives you architectural freedom that modular systems cannot match.

In the UAE market specifically, custom builds are the norm for anything above 30 sqm. The expectation at ADIPEC, Dubai Airshow, GITEX, and Arab Health is that serious exhibitors invest in purpose-built environments. Modular stands at these shows tend to look exactly like what they are — temporary.

Custom builds also make economic sense when you exhibit at the same show annually. A well-designed custom stand can be rebuilt at 50–65% of the original cost, with storage between shows.

    When modular works

Modular stands excel when you exhibit at many different shows throughout the year, each with different stand dimensions. If you're doing 8–12 shows annually across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, shipping a modular system is more practical than building custom each time.

They also suit organisations with decentralised marketing — where regional teams need to set up and tear down without specialist contractors.

    The hybrid approach

Many of our clients use a hybrid model: a custom-built core structure (backwall, counters, meeting pod) combined with modular elements (reconfigurable side panels, swappable graphics). This provides 80% of the brand impact of full custom at 60% of the cost across multiple shows.

    Cost comparison

For a 36-sqm stand at DWTC, expect approximately AED 55,000–75,000 for a mid-range custom build, AED 30,000–45,000 for a quality modular system (first purchase), and AED 15,000–25,000 for modular reuse at subsequent shows. The break-even point is typically 3–4 uses.
